The Methacton School District Counseling Program maximizes student potential in academic, career, personal and social development. The program encourages student success through collaboration with families, staff, and community.

Skyview Counseling Services

In accordance with the Methacton School Counseling Program mission, the mission of the Skyview School Counseling Program is to ensure that all students develop the academic, personal/social and career related skills that they need to become successful students, lifelong learners, and persons of exemplary Character.

At Skyview, our 5th and 6th grade counselors "loop" with students. This means each counselor stays with the same group of students for two years — first as their 5th grade counselor, then continuing with them into 6th grade.

Beth VanBuren is the counselor for students graduating in even-numbered years, and Angela Hiller is the counselor for students graduating in odd-numbered years.

Individual Counseling

Individual Counseling

The school counselors at Skyview are available to meet with students for individual counseling sessions throughout the year. Students may be referred by a parent, teacher or the child can request their own appointment to see the counselor.

Students who would like to have an appointment with the school counselor will find appointment request slips in each classroom at Skyview. Students are encouraged to fill out the slip and give it to the counselor or to a teacher to give to the counselor. Appointments will be made for the following day or as soon as possible. If it is an emergency situation, the counselor will prioritize the appointment.

Students come see their counselor for a variety of reasons which may include the following:
* friendship issues
* conflict resolution
* problem solving
* academic support
* changes and transitions
* loss of a loved one
* questions about school
* wanting to get involved in something at school
...and more.

Individual counseling sessions may be brief or require more than one session. The school counselor's goal is to help students resolve personal/social/emotional issues so that they can be the best person and learner they can be.

Small Group Counseling

Small groups enhance skill building by allowing students to practice skills in a smaller, more structured setting, and to give and receive feedback and provide support/encouragement to and from their peers. Small groups enhance the delivery of school counseling services to students in an effective, efficient manner.

Career Awareness

The Skyview Counselors help all students explore a variety of career and work options, post secondary education opportunities, and learn about themselves in terms of personal interests, skills and abilities throughout the year.

Career Day is an annual event that is planned at Skyview for both 5th and 6th grade students. The event gives students an opportunity to interact with individuals who work in a variety of fields and to learn more about careers and post secondary options.

Beth H. VanBuren, M.S. Ed.

Greetings, and welcome to Skyview, my name is Beth VanBuren. I came to the Methacton School District for the start of the September 2002 school year. Prior to joining the district I was an elementary counselor in Chester County and a special education teacher in Massachusetts.

I grew up in Chester County, Pennsylvania and earned my Bachelor Degree from Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York with studies in the areas of sociology, psychology and child/ family development. After completion of college I enrolled at Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts and earned a Master of Science in Applied Psychology with a concentration in School Counseling.

It brings me great pleasure and pride to be working as a school counselor. I actually had goals of becoming a school counselor that go back to my early days of school. As a young child, I remember the positive impact my elementary school counselor had on me. Further, my eighth grade yearbook actually predicted that I would grow up to one day be a school counselor.

My professional life is balanced by my first loves as a wife and mother. My husband is an educator as well and has been since he graduated from college. Our two daughters bring us great joy. Becoming a parent has been the best thing in the world for me. My role as a mother has helped me learn to become a better person both personally and professionally. I believe that I have developed a greater understanding and compassion for the challenges that children and their parents encounter each day.

I have also recently pursued a health and wellness goal. Since fall of 2011 I have been running in local runs and half marathons in Philadelphia. I encourage others to find ways for personal improvement and wellness.

I look forward to another great school year at Skyview with our fantastic school community. Let's soar HAWKS!

Angela Hiller

I am very excited to be part of the excellent staff here at Skyview. My prior counseling experience is as a middle school counselor in Marlboro, NJ and as a SAP Counselor, where I worked in all four of the elementary schools in Hatboro-Horsham. I attended The College of New Jersey for both my undergraduate education as well as graduate school, where I received my M.A. in School Counseling.

I love getting to know students and helping them to learn skills to be their most successful. Personally, I have a daughter that is in elementary school and a son that is in middle school. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, visiting the beach (I was lucky to grow up in a small town near the “shore”), and attending as many concerts as I can.
