Summer is a great time to unwind, spend time outdoors, and enjoy time with family and friends. It’s also a great time to READ! Summer reading allows students to stretch their imaginations, relax, and maintain and continue to grow their reading comprehension and vocabulary.

Skyview teachers want you to keep reading this summer, and we are strongly recommending all students participate in our Skyview Summer Reading Program. The program is simple:

1. Read two books over the summer! Students, please choose books that interest you and are at an appropriate reading level.

2. For each book you read - Show what you have read by completing this very short Google form. This fall, your Reading teacher will be able to see what you have read over the summer! You will also be able to chat with your peers, share your book recommendations, and get book ideas from others

Please understand, that besides the Skyview Destiny Library Catalog and Skyview MackinVIA Digital Catalog, we cannot guarantee the integrity of the sites listed below. As usual, it is suggested that parents/guardians preview all reading and audio material to ensure the subject and situations fit your family values and is age appropriate for your child. Have your child keep a journal where they can write daily or weekly. Check out some writing prompts below.

Ideas for Personal Narratives

Think about the best field trip you ever had. Write about that day.
Some people love trying new things and some people do not. Write about a time when you tried something new.
It is important for people to feel proud of themselves. Write about a time when you felt proud.
Spending time with family and friends are some of the best times people have. Write about a time spent with a family member or friend.
Some people give up when things get too difficult. Write about a time you were learning something new and did not give up.\
Sometimes moments happen that we want to remember for a long time. Write about a memory you want to remember.

Ideas for Fictional Narratives

Pretend you are transported to a different time. Write about your adventure in this different time period.
You have won a contest and you get to choose any school job (principal, teacher, etc) to do for a day. Write a story about this day.
Imagine that tomorrow is going to be the perfect day. Write about the perfect day you will have.
Many children and teenagers spend hours playing video games. Write a made-up story about being trapped in a video game.
Pretend you are stranded on a deserted tropical island. Write about your adventure on the island.
Imagine you are at the park with friends. You find a rusty old key. Write a story about what happens next.

Ideas for Opinion Writing

Would you rather attend school or be homeschooled? Write an essay that clearly supports your opinion.
At what age should children get their first cell phone? Persuade the reader to agree with your choice by giving reasons and details.
Some people think students should wear uniforms. What do you think? Write an essay to support your opinion.
What is the most interesting subject in school? Write an essay that clearly supports your opinion.
In your opinion, is it better to receive gifts or compliments? Write an essay that clearly supports your opinion.
Do you think students should be able to use a calculator in math class? Write an essay that clearly supports your opinion.

Ideas for Informational Writing

Choose an animal you know a lot about. Write an informational essay about that animal.
Write a biography about a famous person or a person in your family.
Think of a task that you know how to do well. Write a how-to paper explaining how to do that skill.
Inventions make the world the way it is. Write about one helpful invention. Include what it does and how it is helpful.
Choose two animals, objects, people, or places to compare and contrast. Include three ways they are the same and three ways they are different.
Think about someone you respect. This can be someone you know or someone you have learned about. Write a paper about this person.

Ways to Respond to Literature

Which character reminds you most of yourself? Use details from the text to explain your choice.
If there was a sequel to this book, what would happen? Write about 3 events that could happen in a sequel.
If you could change the end of the story, how would you change it and why?
Rewrite a part of the story from a point of view of another character.
Create a one page comic strip that retells one of the main events from your book.
Summarize the story. Include the characters, setting, problem, and solution in your summary.

Ways to Respond to Informational Text

Write three important facts and three interesting facts from the text.
Choose a chapter or section to summarize. What is the main idea of this section or chapter?
Summarize the text features in this text. Which one was the most helpful? Which one was the least helpful?
What information on this topic would you add to the text if you could? Why?
Choose six tricky words from the text. Determine the meanings of these words. Then use them in a new sentence about the topic.
Did your opinion of this topic change after reading this text? Why or why not?
